Luck (and unluckiness) is quite a heavy topic. You probably can get an Ph.D degree researching about this and we need a wise philosopher to explain it fully to us. So, forget about that. Let us see how we get (or not getting) our luck in bridge in practical manner.

Perhaps knowing the statistic of every possible hand only need to be known by Expert that develop a bidding system. But sometimes, you just need to know which is the most probable hand that your partner has. Why? Of course to give you the best contract and giving you the top board !
With so many artificial convention that being use commonly or rarely, alerting a special bid will be more often than before. Some people might think the alert is just a courtesy and while the opponent can ask, but it’s not a compulsory to make an alert. Well, that’s no longer true. Alert of every artificial bid that implies other meaning than the willingness to play on that denomination (suit or NT), have to be alert. It’s compulsory.
I often overheard discussion between partners that they will just continue with “common-sense” after certain bidding – in other word they actually feeling lazy to discuss the rest of the sequence. Some “common-sense” also often being asked to be used in the matter of defense. Well, without the hindsight, you will find the “common sense” is no longer that common and make sense. It actually could lead you to a disastrous situation.
Bridge is supposed to be a gentlemen games where all the conventions and systems are disclosed to opponent, play nobly and courteously just like the Royals with just hidden smirk when you score a top on a board. But somehow, it’s not happening anymore… Playing normal weekly session at your local club could be distressing as opponents scream each other between board, husbands try to dominates wives, wives screaming to husband, etc… Reducing the enjoyment of the game itself.
Like it or not, bridge is not individual game. You need a partner, period. Either the partner is your old buddy, colleague at office, fellow member at your local club or even your spouse, bridge partnership has been proven to be quite hard to maintain and a little bit delicate issue. Or not ?
Reason of partnership break-up
The most prestigious title in Bridge are Bermuda Bowl (for Open Team), Venice Cup (for Woman) and Senior Bowl (for Senior). The other very important tournament was what before called “Bridge Olympiad”. That tournament now is called “World Bridge Game” and part of the 3rd Olympic event: the World Mind Sport Games (the other 2 events are winter Olympic and summer Olympic). So, here is the list of the big names in bridge based on Bermuda Bowl 2009 and WBG 2008.
With the lack of significant and rigorous physical activity, together with Chess, Bridge will always be under this classic scrutiny: whether or not bridge is a sport. I can see where the confusion started: people relates sport with physical health and people wrongly assume that sport and physical activity/exercise is synonym.
For example: a mother tell his fat kid, “Don’t just sitting around watching TV and eat, do some sport!” – Well, what the mother really want to say is “Do some physical activity”. If the kid then running around with friends outdoor in the park, swim around in the river or play Frisbee on the beach, etc will the mother be happy?Yes, I guess….
